Alliance Tournament XXII Finals Are Coming

Nearly five weeks have passed since the last ships left the arena in the Alliance Tournament XXII preliminary rounds. We started with 58 teams, seven rounds of Swiss competition, and more than 200 matches; now just 16 remain, ready to return on 31 October to be forged in glory and have their names etched on the Alliance Tournament Trophy.

The finals take us back into an elimination bracket, and stakes rise as fights move from Thunderdome to Tranquility, while some considerably more expensive ships are about to become available.

Meet the Final 16

Listed below are the teams that survived the preliminaries and earned their place in the finals. Every team has already earned 2 Herald and 2 Penitence; it's now a question of how many they go home with. Click any team name to check out its team page, roster, and participating pilots.

Every finalist has declared a flagship, and the list below contains an overwhelming quantity of Armageddon Navy Issues, joined by Vindicators and Barghests. Flagships can use faction, deadspace, or officer variants of certain modules that regular tournament ships cannot, and they can even be fielded when their hull type has otherwise been banned. Teams do not have to deploy them - but if a flagship enters the arena and is destroyed, it is gone for the remainder of the tournament.

And flagships are not necessarily the most exotic ships we could see. For ATXXII, teams can potentially field previous Alliance Tournament prize ships, including the Geri, Bestla, Cybele, Shapash, Cobra, Sidewinder, Skua, and Anhinga. Their use is deliberately restricted, but it means some genuinely rare pieces of New Eden history could find themselves being primaried live in front of everyone. Back to Double Elimination

The Swiss system got everyone here, but the finals are a different beast.

The 16 teams begin in a double-elimination bracket, initially fighting best-of-one matches. Once only eight teams remain, the tournament steps up again into a double-elimination best-of-three series, before everything concludes with a best-of-five Grand Final. The further you go, the more often you have to prove you have what it takes.

Those longer series also introduce the Avalanche Ban system. After each fight, teams are forced to ban ships from their opponent's previous composition, with those bans remaining for the rest of the series. The deeper a best-of-three goes, the harder it becomes to simply reach for the same successful answer again.

The first 8 matches of these teams are known as well, so if you're looking to tune in at a particular time to show your support for a particular team, the lineup is as follows for the opening rounds on 31 October:

Think You Can Predict the Winner?

Speaking of Challonge - watching teams make questionable decisions is fun. Demonstrating that you definitely knew better all along is even better.

For the finals, we are also running an ATXXII Predictions Contest on Challonge. Create a Challonge account, head to the page here, fill out the complete bracket with your predicted winners, and select who you think will ultimately take the tournament.

All entrants must provide an email address to Challonge, which is visible to the organizer. Once the tournament is over, the top 10 players on the Challonge leaderboard will be contacted via the email associated with their account to arrange prize fulfillment.

In the event that two people have tied results, we'll go with whoever submitted first to determine the top spot, then adjust going down. That is 10,900 PLEX in leaderboard prizes, paid out from the pool of PLEX collected through team entry fees. So whether your bracket is the product of hundreds of hours of tournament analysis or entirely based on which alliance logo looks coolest, there is something to play for.

This year, the Alliance Tournament finals will not just be broadcast live - the commentators and casters will be on stage whilst the whole thing is played out in front of a studio audience.

The ATXXII Finals are coming to Confetti X in Nottingham, UK, on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November. Doors open at 12:00 on both days, with the first match beginning at 13:30 on Saturday and 13:00 on Sunday. Each day is ticketed separately at £10 (plus fees), and every attendee receives a token on arrival that can be exchanged for a beer or soda.

The esports theatre has seating for around 80 people, with unreserved seats, while the rest of the venue includes additional seating, a bar, and screens showing the broadcast. Saturday is expected to feature an eight-plus-hour program and 28 matches, while Sunday's running time will depend on how far those best-of-three series go. Even if Nottingham is a few too many jumps away, you will still be able to watch each match live on the Fenris Creations Twitch channel as the final 16 are reduced to eight, then to four, then to two – and eventually to a single Alliance Tournament XXII champion. Day 5 and Day 6 of the prelims are now up on Youtube as well.

Some ships are difficult to win, some are expensive to lose, certain brackets can be ruined, and there is still one final chance to be Forged in Glory.
