T2 Frigates' Usefulness

At the moment I have Interceptors and Assault Ships trained up pretty well. In a week or two, I'll have Covert Ops and EW Frigates trained to the same level. If I can get my missile skills up, Stealth Bomber might be in my future.

Training for the elite frigates has been very useful. It's forced me to learn basic skills like Navigation V, Engineering V, Electronics V, etc, all of which are useful no matter what I'm flying. But as for the T2 Frigates themselves, how useful are they, really? As a solo PvE player (major carebear), they seem pretty niche-oriented. Any advice on how to maximize the potential of these little ships?
