So I am relatively new to this game. What are people’s thoughts? I am thinking about going with missiles. What are some pros and cons?

The biggest advantages of missiles are...
1) They can be any combination of damage type you want
2) You don't really have to worry about range
3) They use very little cap

The only con is they do less damage than guns when the guns are at optimal.

If you go for missions then I vote missiles. Type of dmg you want and don't need to worry about optimal or cap.
BUT If you go for PVP then turrets is a must...

Vote for turrets...
Becose if you ever want to pvp (bored of pirates or want to 0.0) the turrets is the BEST decision. Cool
Also in pve it's not bad (with new tier3 BS Twisted Evil )

When you first start the game go with missles because missles are best for npc'ing.

I prefer turrets cause not only are they better for PvP, but they're easier for me to work with and whatnot

Ford or Chevy?

General rule is
PVE = Missiles
PVP = Guns

The downside to missiles in PVP is at range is flight time. Guns do damage NOW, missiles have travel time. Nothing is quite as frustrating as watching someone flying faster then your missiles, although there is a small bit of humor in it.
Course just as frustrating is slinging lead at them and having your turrent tracking not keep up with them.

Missiles take less skills, so good to start with. Guns take more skills, but can do a lot of damage, though you'll have to worry about cap.

I chose turrets simply because of damage per second. Missiles do tend to look nice, but when you get up to the large and bigger artillery cannons, those things are a sight to behold when they fire. The BEST ones are the Captial-Class artilleries...you can even see what they look like when they fire in the Revelations 1 trailer...Smile...Tachyon beams are nice too, but I honestly like the larger pulse lasers better.

umm, you only got 1 in 3 correct there...

on the up side:

1) they can be any combination of damage type
2) they use NO cap at all
3) you can't really miss with them, unless your target can fly faster than your missile (missile speeds vary)
4) you don't have to worry about your target's transversal speed to make sure its trackable.
5) the shortest range missiles still outrange the shortest range guns
6) missiles deliver fairly consistent damage, while guns have a lot more spread
7) missile launchers and projectile guns are the only weapons you can use if you want to passive tank your ship.

on the down side:

1) the longest range missiles can't shoot as far as the longest range guns, when using range enhancing mods.
2) missiles can take a long time to get to the target, pvp targets can often warp out before ever getting hit by your barrage.
3) some ships can simply outfly your missiles
4) missiles have less damage than guns accross the range.
5) many missile ships have their damage bonus limited to one damage type.

In the end, the positives and negatives work out to this:

For doing missions, killing NPCs, missiles rule and allow you to complete your kill missions in much less time. (and largely without thinking, making it somewhat unsporting and boring)

For doing pvp, killing other players, guns rule (for the most part) with their instant damage and to some degree also due to the different bonuses and fitting slots of gun ships.

As with every rule, there are exceptions, for example: if you combine a sensor damping Raven with a good tackler like a sabre, missiles can do pretty well in pvp, though a Sabre with a gunship does just as well.
